Overwatch is finally releasing on Nintendo Switch later this month, but Switch owners will only be able to play together with other Switch owners at launch, since the game will not feature cross-platform play. Blizzard, however, confirmed that it may be coming in the future.
Speaking with GameSpot, Overwatch principal producer Wes Yanagi confirmed that there is interest in making it happen, and the team is exploring ways to make it happen. Sadly, there are some difficulties so it’s not yet clear if or when cross-play will ever come.
We are exploring how to bring this to Overwatch, but do not have anything to share at this time.
While developing the Switch version of Overwatch, Blizzard’s main focus was to make the game run acceptably on the console, so cross-platform play was way below the list of priorities.
Our focus really has been just trying to get Overwatch on the Nintendo Switch so we can have all new ways to play and welcome the Nintendo community into the Overwatch community.
Overwatch on Nintendo Switch was being planned since the console released a few months back. The game will run at 30fps, docked at 900p and un-docked at 720p, and it will feel like Overwatch on the other platforms, according to Wes Yanagi. The frame rate is a big change over the 60fps on PS4 and Xbox One, so it will be interesting to see who smooth the game will feel.
Overwatch releases on Nintendo Switch on October 15th worldwide. The game is also available on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
