Why Are Facial Recognition Files Found in Diablo Immortal?

According to Diablo Immortal Global Community Lead Adam Fletcher, the facial recognition files namely FaceDetector.dll, FacialAnalyser.dll, and LandmarkTracker.dll, found in Diablo Immortal’s game directory were a part of a “now” discarded feature that was supposed to make characters mimic the player’s facial movements and expressions. 

However, as per Fletcher, the feature didn’t receive a green light as it didn’t meet the quality standards.

After looking into the respective DLL files while checking out a myriad of threads and posts, we learned some of the DLL files, including the Facial Analyser and the Landmark Tracker are a part of Nvidia’s augmented reality SDK file used by developers to implement AR-related functionalities in their games. 

This fits with what Adam Fletcher wrote in his tweet, “So I went to check on this. We were once working on a feature allowing your character to mimic your facial motions and expressions but we deprecated that as we thought the feature did not meet our quality standards.”

Seeing all this, we can say that Diablo Immortal is by no means tracking your face or any other such thing. But, then again, we are not a part of Blizzard Entertainment, and we do not know 100% what and which form of data they track and what not.
