Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury is among the most unique 3D Mario games released so far, with the creative level design and multiple playable characters available from the get-go making it feel almost like a direct sequel to the classic Super Mario Bros. 2, which is yet another quirky title that does not feel like a Mario game too much.
The four main playable characters have made their appearance in some form in previous Mario games, and if you have played the aforementioned Super Marios Bros. 2, you already have a rough idea of what Mario, Luigi, Peach and Toad can do. But if you haven’t, you have come to the right place: here’s everything you need to know about all playable characters in Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury.
Before we proceed to talk about the characters’ unique abilities, we should mention how easy it is to switch between characters during the main adventure. Right before starting a stage, you can press the B button to swap characters. Make sure to be as quick as possible, however, as you don’t get a whole lot of time to make your selection.
Mario doesn’t need any introduction. His abilities are well-known, and in Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury, he is the most balanced character of the entire roster, with standard running speed, normal jump, and no special technique. Mario is the right choice for any player who never has the pleasure of playing Super Mario 3D World before: he’ll ease you into the game just fine.
They may be brothers and steadfast adventure buddies, but Luigi and Mario play nothing alike. Sacrificing speed for jumping height, Luigi can be a difficult character to control, as his slower speed and overall slipperiness can make precise platforming a little difficult.
For once, Princess Peach is in no need for saving: she is the one doing the saving now. Peach doesn’t play too differently from Mario, featuring average speed and jump height, but she can briefly float in the air after jumping. This makes precise platforming much easier than with other characters.
Toad is the character to get if you want to speedrun the game, as he is the fastest character in the entire roster. His jumping abilities, however, are the worse in the game, so Toad is a character that only those with excellent knowledge of the mechanics can use to his full potential.
Rosalina is not available from the beginning of the game and must be unlocked first. Once unlocked, she can be used in any stage. She is by far the most unique character in Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury since she can double jump and attack enemies without any power-up, making most of the game a walk in the park. This is not a huge issue, considering you have to complete the game first before being able to unlock her.
