I was extremely happy initially when I heard that Ubisoft is taking us back to Erathia with a new game in the HoMM series. I actually grew up playing Heroes of Might and Magic 3 and I still play it today, so you can imagine that I was a bit disappointed to see the new visuals and combat mechanics in the new mobile title.

But at least it’s set in the same world, it has troops that we know from the franchise and is a good game – although different. If you want some games like Heroes 3, we have you covered, but make sure to check back soon for our Might & Magic Heroes: Era of Chaos tips and tricks below!

Grab all those early freebies ASAP

The first 20-25 levels that you gain in Might & Magic Heroes: Era of Chaos will also be followed by all sorts of rewards: mission rewards, event rewards, first time completion rewards and so on.

You will have tons of things in your inventory, you’ll be piling up on Gems and unlock new units and tips. These all give you a huge advantage early on and make it a lot easier for you to progress faster through the main campaign, so make sure to collect all those rewards!

Basically, if there’s a red dot anywhere on the screen (usually in the main menu) make sure to tap it and grab those rewards. Let no stone unturned in order to progress faster,

Pay attention to the position of your troops

As you will learn the hard way, the position of your troops matters a lot. Here are some important things that you should know:

The two lanes

You have two lanes that you can place troops on: the front two rows are for melee units and the back two rows are for ranged units. Ranged units deal more damage the farther they are from the enemy.

This means that a ranged unit placed in the top right corner, for example, will deal maximum damage to a unit coming from the opposite direction. So have this in mind when setting up your lanes.

Troop placement

It’s not just the lanes that matter – the placement of all your troops can influence the battle.

Take the Monks for example: when you unlock their first regular skill, they give High Morale to all units in front of them – so it makes sense to place them last in a long row.

The same thing goes with most other units, giving bonuses or getting various boosts based on their position on the map: the cyclops shoot in a straight line, so you need them where the most enemies pile up, for example.

In other words: know what your troops do and how they behave and place them accordingly. The next two chapters in this guide further elaborate on this.

Learn the roles of the troops

There are five types of troops that you can have, each with some general things to have in mind (these can change a bit from unit to unit, but knowing what each role does is still better than nothing):

Attack: These are melee, offensive units that decrease the target’s armor and make multiple effects redundant.

Defense: High health units with damage reduction. These are great to be placed up front to soak up some damage.

Charge: They get bonus damage against Caster units and rush to the back of the board if they have no enemies in the way.

Ranged: They shoot from a distance and the greater the distance between them and the target, the more damage they deal.

Caster: High magic resistance and all sorts of buffs/debuffs. The support units in Might & Magic Heroes: Era of Chaos.

Learn advanced strategies in the tutorial

As soon as you unlock the training grounds, you should complete all stages available there. Not only that you will receive some top rewards from doing so, but you will also learn important battle tricks that will help a lot.

I have covered those battle tricks in the chapters above this one, but actually doing it – and being forced to try over and over again until you take full advantage of those positioning bonuses makes it easier for you to remember and apply in future battles.

Constantly upgrade your units

Keeping your units upgraded as much as possible is vital if you want to remain competitive in all areas of the game. There are all sorts of upgrades that you can buy, from regular level ups to skill upgrades, equipment upgrades and so on.

There is no particular order in which you should approach these: just dump all your resources, so that you have your best, starting units in top shape at all times: max their level out, upgrade their equipment (and make sure it’s of the highest possible level by hitting the hammer button in the middle) and then rank them up and unlock new skills.

You constantly have to go back to your main units and level them up, then upgrade them in order to increase their overall power and make it easier for you to win battles easy.

The game itself makes it a very simple task to upgrade the gear: hit the + button on the gear that you want to upgrade and it will show you the items you need and where to get them. Play those stages over and over again, rinse and repeat!

Focus on the main story units early on

Unless you’re planning to pay some real life money to boost your progress in MMH: Era of Chaos, I recommend to focus most of your resources (and attention) to the main story units: you will receive more shards for them during the missions and in the Underground and it will be easier for you to upgrade them.

Generally, you should look at the rarity of the troops that you have: the rarer, the better they are and the higher their strength will be when you level them up and upgrade their gear.

Collect extra goodies on the Campaign Map

In a similar fashion to the classic HoMM games, Era of Chaos also has some hidden treasure for you on the main campaign map. Make sure to keep an eye out for these goodies as you progress through the stages and remove that fog of war!

Keep an eye on all those marketplaces

There are various types of marketplaces to unlock and keep an eye on in the game: the Arena Marketplace, the Mystical one, the Campaign Marketplace, your Guild’s one and so on.

These are the places that you should constantly check out, as there will always be a chance for a really good item that you need there. From unit and hero shards to all sort of consumables that you need to upgrade your heroes, they’re all available for purchase and only cost currency that you get from the various in-game modes.

In other words, the more active you are and the better you play the game, the more items you will be able to purchase from these marketplaces!

Know what your unlocked Heroes are good for

Apart from Catherine, there are 13 other Heroes for you to unlock, including classics like Sir Mullich, Lord Haart, Gelu, Crag Hack and so on. Many of the heroes you know (and maybe even love some of them) from Heroes 3 are here and waiting to be unlocked.

These heroes give you all sorts of bonuses and work better with some troops than they do with others, so it’s extremely important to know what they do and use the best ones for the troops that you have unlocked.

For example, when you unlock Solmyr, you not only get access to his well known Chain Lightning spell, but you also get +12 Hero attack and intelligence, as well as his Specialty which is related to the Chain Lighting itself. (However, it’s unclear at the moment how to unlock Solmyr).

Each hero has their own Pros and Cons and works better with some units, so make sure to have this in mind if you have multiple options to choose from. Or check out our article on the best hero in the game.

Use the Underground to hoard up on some Unit shards

The best and easiest way to increase the number of stars your Units have is by playing and replaying the stages available in the Underground.

You can see what the top rewards are – and usually you should go for those that offer you unit shards for the units that you want to upgrade. Early on you get access to shards for rare, solid units like the Cavalier, the Griffin or the Vampire, later on unlocking more and more missions that reward you with important unit shards.

Have in mind that these missions require 12 energy to complete, so some sort of micromanagement is required since progress in the main campaign is important too!

Get three star ratings in all stages

Probably the most important things that you need to do when completing the main story stages is getting 3 stars in each mission. This allows you to complete the battles instantly afterwards, making it extremely easy to gather the resources needed for improving your units.

I would go as far as saying that as soon as you’re not able to get 3 stars in a single player mission, you should instantly focus on improving your team: upgrade their equipment, focus on Underground missions to get shards in order to star them up… do what’s needed, but don’t try to continue playing the main story until you can get 3 stars in its missions.

Join an active Guild

The Guild system is what gets the game closer to the traditional HoMM games. It has an extremely advanced and challenging Guild Adventure area where you and yout guild mates explore a huge map and complete challenges together.

But there are even more goodies in a guild and you can only take advantage of them to the maximum by being in an extremely active guild: one where the members help each other, donate and participate in events.

So as soon as you join a guild, take some time to explore everything about it and see if it is an active one or not. If it’s not, don’t be afraid to leave and search for a new one: being in a solid guild is essential and helps you out a lot!

How to Spend Diamonds?

The game doesn’t hold back when it comes to rewarding you with diamonds early on: from completing stages, to free gifts, Arena ranking rewards and so on… there will be all sorts of methods for you to get fewer or more diamonds for free.

And soon you’ll run out of energy – in the main campaign, then in the Guild adventure and you’ll feel like spending some diamonds to get extra chances there. In the end, you’re getting a ton for free anyway, right?

Well, I wouldn’t say that it is a good idea – especially if you’re a free to play player. In that case, you should still be patient and save up on diamonds until you have enough to perform a 10 Purchase in the altar, guaranteeing a SR unit for your roster.

That does cost 2,700 diamonds and even with all those free rewards, you won’t get there insanely fast, but you’ll be there eventually (sooner than in most other games, actually) so be patient and play a smart game and only use diamonds on those Altar summons!

Set up your defense in the Arena

This is something that you might’ve done, but it took me a while to realize that I have the option to actually set up my defensive team in the Arena, so I decided that it’s better to make this obvious.

So tap the Colossus, go to the Arena and set up that Defensive team by tapping the (small) icon in the upper side of the screen. This way, you will reduce chances of losing your rankings like I did from running with my basic team and not understanding what was going on…

These would be for now all our Might & Magic Heroes: Era of Chaos tips and tricks. But the game itself is massive, with tons of things to do and unlock, so expect to hear back from use pretty soon with more guides to help you better play the game and take advantage of the more advanced mechanics.
