The Sorting Ceremony is the main event that happens on every Hogwarts student’s first day of school. Each student approaches a chair in front of all others and wears the iconic Sorting Hat (that belonged to Godric Gryffindor himself), who picks the most appropriate house for them based on what it sees in the student’s mind and personality.

In Hogwarts Legacy, the Sorting Ceremony happens after the lengthy prologue that introduces us to the backstory, main antagonists, and Professor Fig. After several intense scenes where you get to learn the basics of the gameplay, you finally find your way to Hogwarts, right on time to get sorted as the last student for the day (much to the displeasure of the current headmaster, Phineas Nigellus Black).

When you sit on the chair, Professor Weasley will put the Sorting Hat on your head, and it will get you to choose one of the dialogue options on two occasions. Your choices for those two occasions determine which house you will get.

If you want to wear the scarlet and gold of the proud and courageous house of Gryffindor in your first playthrough of Hogwarts Legacy, you need to pick the right responses to the Sorting Hat’s prompts.

When the Hat mentions your preferences and expectations, you will have to choose between these two options:

  • “I can’t wait to start classes.”
  • “I can’t wait to explore.”

To make sure you get Gryffindor, you may choose either option—even though the first one may sound like something only a true Ravenclaw would say.

Then, the Sorting Hat will mention that it detects something in you, but it is not sure what it is. Here, you will be offered four choices, which are quite clearly linked with the four houses and the usual strengths of their students:

  • Daring
  • Curiosity
  • Loyalty
  • Ambition

Every Gryffindor at heart already knows it, but you should pick Daring here, because Gryffindor students are brave of heart. Curiosity, Loyalty, and Ambition should respectively remind you of Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, and Slytherin.

Soon after that, you will see that the Sorting Hat chose Gryffindor for you.

In case you are not completely satisfied with the house you’ve been sorted into, no need to feel disappointed. By now, Harry Potter fans know that the Sorting Hat takes your personal preferences into account.

Hogwarts Legacy honors the lore and gives you the chance to choose a different house immediately after the sorting. Those who are playing on PS5 need to hit circle to change their house, or press square on their controllers to accept the one they got at first.

Congratulations, young Gryffindor! You can now hop off to your Gryffindor dormitory and get ready for the first day of classes! And don’t forget—if you need more help with your journey through the wonderful world of Hogwarts Legacy, explore our other guides and articles for the game.
