How to Get and Use Raw Salmon in Minecraft

Raw salmon is a food in Minecraft that is useful in a few ways, including taming cats. It restores 2 hunger points and 0.2 saturation.

There are many ways to obtain raw salmon including fishing for it by casting a fishing rod in to a body of water. Players can fish for salmon in small pools of water, player-mad bodies of water, underground or overground. The trick is to watch the float as it lies atop the water until it gently bobs below the surface- this is the moment the player must reel in their fish. This can happen anywhere between 5 and 30 seconds after throwing the line into the water.

Fishing does not guarantee a salmon, or even a fish, as players can catch junk or treasure from the water too.

Raw salmon can also be obtained when it is dropped as mob loot:

• Guardians/Elder Guardians have a chance of dropping fish randomly, or when they die they have a 25% chance of dropping raw salmon.
• Polar Bears have a 25% chance of dropping raw salmon when they are killed.
• Fished Salmon always drops 1 raw salmon when killed, unless it is killed by fire then it, of course, drops cooked salmon.

Raw salmon can also be found as chest loot- either in a bonus chest or in a fisherman’s chest in a village. Fishermen can also give raw salmon to players as gifts by throwing the fish at players affected by Hero of the Village.

How to Use Raw Salmon

Raw salmon can be used to heal or tame cats, tempt them off of beds or chests, and get them to breed by putting them in ‘love mode’. Raw salmon can also be used to gain an ocelot’s trust. If fed to baby cats or baby ocelots, raw salmon makes them grow 10% faster.

Dolphins are also partial to raw salmon and if they are fed the fish and then swim to a shipwreck or underwater ruin they can help the player find a chest.

Wolves can be fed raw salmon to help them heal by 2 points.

Raw Salmon can also be bought or sold when trading with a fisherman with Journeyman-level fishermen offering to buy 13 raw salmon for an emerald.

Players can cook raw salmon and create cooked salmon by using a smelting recipe.
