Doing so will engage the selected character and its Emblem in a conversation that increases their Bond. 

Making characters with Emblem Rings equipped fight is the best and simplest way to accumulate Bond Points in Fire Emblem Engage. And assuming you want to amass Bond Points fast, visit the Arena in Somniel and perform Emblem Training using Bond Fragments.
