You can cancel a digging designation by pressing the d key on your keyboard to open the designation, pressing the x key to remove the designation, and then using the cursor to select the area where you want to cancel the digging. 

But keep this in mind! You can do this only if the designated area is not dug out and is still in the process of being dug.

Jumping on the next question, how to undo an already dug area in Dwarf Fortress? Well! You cannot do it. Once you have dug an area and the action is complete, you cannot revert it to how it was before. All you can do here is build something like a wall or other structures to cover it. 

Now, about how to cancel digging orders in Dwarf Fortress. You can do it using the eraser button that appears on the screen. It is helpful when you want to change the plans of the current room that is planned for the dig.
