Deus Ex: The Fall Slams Jailbreakers with Useless Guns

I’ve just completed writing our Deus Ex: The Fall guide and found out something pretty funny about the game: apparently, it is not playable on jailbroken iPhones!

According to Touch Arcade, if you play Deus Ex: The Fall on a jailbroken device, you will have a pretty big surprise when you’ll try to fire your weapon: you won’t be able to do it, and you will get a message from Square Enix saying “We are sorry but you can’t fire on jailbroken devices” (see the image at the top of the article).

I am not really against this means of preventing or trying to fight against piracy, but there is a big BUT here: the people who have jailbroken devices are not exclusively pirates and never pay for their apps. There are many people using a jailbroken iPhone and still paying for games. If they decide to legally purchase Deus Ex: The Fall, they won’t be able to play the game. And that seems a bit unfair.

What do you say? Was this a smart move on Square Enix’s side? Do you own a jailbroken device and purchased or wanted to purchase Deus Ex: The Fall but will no longer do it now because it would be unplayable?
