Chrono Cross Remastered Differences

The original Chrono Cross released on the PlayStation 22 years ago on August 15, 2000. It’s been a hot minute since then, so fans of the Chrono series were excited to see what was going to be changed in this new HD remaster. From the official Square Enix website, the listed differences are:

  • 3D models converted to HD
  • Refined character illustrations
  • Higher-quality background music
  • Switch enemy encounters on or off
  • Background filter feature
  • Battle enhancement features to make combat easier
  • Auto-battle function
  • Switch between imitation pixel font and HD font
  • Change screen resolution
  • Subtitle support for English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish languages

The most obvious and major change is the graphical upgrade the entire game is getting. All character models got a high-definition makeover, and they have never looked this good! In addition to the 3D models, the 2D character portraits were redone with new original art that looks fantastic. The background environments have also been touched up, and you can even change filters to make the game look different.

There are plenty of gameplay tweaks to make the whole adventure feel more modern. For starters, enemy counters can now be turned off entirely for those who want to breeze through areas. There is also an auto-battle function that lets the game take control of your characters. Finally, there are battle enhancement features that can make combat encounters easier.

As a special bonus, Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition includes the previously Japan exclusive spin-off game Radical Dreamers: Le Tresor Interdit. Released originally on the Super Famicom Satellaview add-on, Radical Dreamers is a visual novel that serves as an origin story to Chrono Cross. You can view some gameplay footage from the official trailer below.

Those are all the major differences in the new remaster of Chrono Cross. What do you think? If you’re a fan of the original game, will you be picking up The Radical Dreamers Edition? Let us know in the comments below!
