Vagante Knight Strategy Guide: Build, Tips, and More

Vagante is an action-packed platformer with rogue-like elements. It is one of the few games in existence that features a permadeath feature wherein your character cannot be revived (normally) when you die.

Vagante also features procedurally generated levels, so each instance is a whole different experience for players. The game’s mechanics can be quite punishing for new players and the learning curve may be a little steep, but we are here to help you with that!

Vagante gives players access to a few classes to play with, namely being the Knight, the Rogue and the Mage. In this guide, we are going to tell you everything you need to know about playing a successful Knight!

Introduction

The Knight is part of the original three classes the player starts out with in Vagante. The Knight is Vagante’s version of the tank-type class, due to which, Knights start out with higher HP than other classes and their affinities have everything to do with their base defence and melee combat.

Being the Tank class of the game, their primary purpose is to absorb damage for the party. Which is a great thing, because Vagante is generally a punishing game, and even with all of that extra HP, the game manages to throw a lot of surprise attacks the player’s way.

One demerit however is that the Knight is a pure melee class, which means they don’t have the ranged alternatives that the Mage class and the Rogue class have access to. This can generally be difficult for newer players to play effectively, but fret not! We are here to provide some insight and show players a general direction to play in.

Knight Advantages

The Knight has a few great things going for them! For one, they have access to three affinity perk trees:

  • Swordsmanship: Points in this perk tree give the Knight new sword techniques and improve their overall damage output.
  • Holy: Points in this perk tree give the Knight a myriad of skills ranging from avoiding fall damage to resurrecting themselves to shooting beams out of their swords!
  • Defence: Points in this perk tree give the Knight straightforward defensive abilities to make him tankier, such as blocking, countering and providing defensive buffs.

And one final perk is that Knights also start off with 100 more HP than the other classes.

While all of this makes the Knight sound like the perfect class to play, there are a couple of issues that plague Knight players.

Knight Disadvantages

The issues that Knight players generally have are:

  • No ranged capabilities: Knight players have to close the gap between themselves and their enemy, putting them at the greatest risk of death if they aren’t prepared.
  • Slow weapons: The weapon choices that are available to the Knight are mostly swords. Being marginally slower than other weapons such as daggers and clubs, Knight players will have to be especially careful about their positioning before they choose to attack.

Knight Strategies

In this section, we will describe the best ways to play the Knight with maximum efficiency.

1. The first thing that players need to keep in mind is that it is important to realize their own positioning because Knights need to be very mindful about maintaining the balance between tanking for their team and dealing damage.

2. When it comes to attacking, Knights can only strike in a stabbing motion directly in front of them. Due to this, having enemies above, below or behind the Knight can be extremely dangerous. The Knight’s biggest weakness is getting surrounded and ganged up on, so avoiding that is key.

3. Vagante is a game that is meant to punish players for making mistakes. Because of this, one major rule is to avoid taking damage whenever possible. Add to this, health replenishing items are also in short supply in most cases, so healing is quite a task. Playing careful and not rushing into unfamiliar areas is highly recommended.

4. As far as going on the offensive, your sword is your best friend! Apart from attacking, swords also push enemies away from you, thereby negating damage, which as we mentioned before, is key to survival. Although the knockback effect is in one direction only, which is why you never leave your back open to enemies and funnel them through one direction only.

Knight Affinities

The reason affinity trees were introduced in Vagante was to make sure every class was built differently, adding variety to the game, but also, to make sure that there was a way for each class to cover up their weaknesses.

From player experiences, what we can add is that no matter what the player chooses to pick, we recommend putting at least one point into Swordsmanship. It allows the player to utilize sword dance, which is basically quick back-and-forth manoeuvring to avoid damage. This generally helps with avoiding large groups of enemies and being surrounded by them.

Another usage of sword dance is that of down-thrust. Down-thrusting is basically hopping using your sword as a base and taking out enemies by hopping all over them. It is a useful technique since enemies cannot really hit the player this way. Certain bosses also fall prey to this technique as they have no way of avoiding it.

Sticking on the topic of affinities, the defensive tree can be really helpful for avoiding small bits of damage from enemies as the player puts more points into them. The buff that is unlocked further down in the tree is exceptionally beneficial as well, just adding even more tankiness to an already durable character.

One major shortcoming of blocking, however, is the fact that most bosses’ attacks are unblockable, which means that players have to be marginally more careful. Initiating any sort of evasive manoeuvre would be the player’s best bet.

Conclusion

And that’s all! We hope this extensive guide gave you all that you need to know about Knights and how to succeed with them. We know that Vagante is a game that takes some practice getting used to, but we are confident that playing a Knight with the knowledge you have now gained will give you a much better chance of survival!
