Complete Guide to Pokémon Go‘s Lunar New Year 2024 Event

Starting Februrary 5, 10 A.M. local time and lasting until February 11, 8 P.M. local time, Pokémon Go‘s annual Lunar New Year event is ringing in the new year with style! There are lots of cool opportunities for Trainers to take advantage of during this event, so here’s all the stuff you should keep an eye out for.

New Pokémon: Drampa

Drampa, the cloudy Dragon-type Pokémon, is appearing in Pokémon Go for the first time ever! Drampa is the perfect Pokémon to introduce now, since its design is based off of mythical Chinese dragons, matching this year’s animal.

Drampa is a dual-type Normal and Dragon-type Pokémon, and it’s a single form Pokémon with no evolution. Not only can Trainers catch Drampa now, but if they’re especially lucky, they may encounter a shiny form of Drampa!

Drampa appears in wild encounters, Special Encounters, and Raids. Even after the Lunar New Year event is over, you’ll still be able to encounter Drampas as normal Pokémon.

By the way, did you know that there’s currently a collaboration between Pokémon Go and the fashion brand FENDI? You can get some snazzy new fashion items for your Trainer, so be sure to check out our guide on how to get the FENDI avatar items in Pokémon Go.

Active Event Bonuses

As per the norm with every other limited-time event in Pokémon Go, there are bonuses active during the event that can help you out in different ways.

  • Traded Pokémon have a higher chance of becoming lucky.
  • You have a higher chance of becoming lucky friends with Trainers on your friends list.
  • Nice/Great/Excellent Pokéball throws reward bonus Candy. Trainers level 31 and above can also get bonus Candy XL.

Increased Pokémon Spawns

During the Lunar New Year event, the following Pokémon have increased spawn rates in the wild, with increased shiny rates as well:

  • Magikarp
  • Dratini
  • Shuckle
  • Fennekin
  • Skrelp
  • Noibat

An especially rare Pokémon, Jangmo-o, can also spawn during this event. Its spawn rate is very low, so only the luckiest Trainers can find it!

    • Druddigon

  • Dratini
  • Trapinch
  • Swablu
  • Gible
  • Darumaka
  • Druddigon
  • Deino
  • Skrelp
  • Tyrunt
  • Goomy
  • Turtonator
  • Drampa

New Paid Timed Research

A new paid Timed Research task list is available for 2.00 USD. Similarly to past paid Timed Research, you’ll have to access to an exclusive list of tasks that reward Stardust, XP, Lucky Eggs, and Special Encounters with event Pokémon.

Paid Timed Research tickets can be purchased from the in-game shop, but they cannot be bought with PokéCoins. You can also gift them to friends if you are Great Friends or higher with them.

Global Challenge: Dragons Unleashed

During the event period, a new Global Challenge goes live. This time around, the Global Challenge is to throw a collective 1,000,000,000 Nice throws to unlock a variety of bonuses for every Trainer across the globe.

For the Global Challenge, when we reach certain thresholds, we’ll unlock featured attacks, specific wild encounters, and specific One-Star and Three-Star Raids. We won’t know any of them until they unlock, but we do know that the featured attacks include two Ground moves, and one Fairy, Dragon, and Normal-type moves each. Eligible Pokémon that evolve during the event period are guaranteed to learn one of the featured attacks.

And that’s it! We hope you enjoy the year of the dragon in Pokémon Go, and if you have any other questions, let us know in the comments below.
