One of the biggest things announced was that the game is going to have “wavedashing” as a technique, which surprised competitive Super Smash Bros. players. Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl is going to have wavedashing – why is it such a big deal?

In Super Smash Bros. Melee, the Nintendo Gamecube entry in the popular Super Smash Bros. series, there was an advanced technique known as “wavedashing”. In order to perform a wavedash, you must jump into the air and then immediately air dodge diagonally into the ground.

When performed correctly, your character would transfer the momentum gained from the air dodge into a sort of slide, moving your character forward. The advantage of this is that as you’re sliding along the ground after the air dodge, your character is in neutral stance, allowing you to do whatever you like as you’re approaching your opponent.

Wavedashing wasn’t really common in casual play, but it ended up being the foundation to high level play, since staying mobile was absolutely crucial in professional Super Smash Bros. Melee play. Nintendo was very adamant about Smash being a party game and not a competitive game, so wavedashing was essentially removed in the future entries in the series.

Wavedashing saw somewhat of a return when Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the latest entry in the series, though it was not as potent as it was in Melee. Still, the gesture was appreciated by the hardcore fans, as it showed that Nintendo was willing to find an even ground with the competitive Smash players.
