Developer Velan Studios is now officially self-publishing Knockout City. It has also announced a surprise crossover with Among Us. And although the business model change and EA split were announced earlier this year, it goes into effect on June 1st, 2022.
After splitting from EA and is now self-publishing Knockout City, does it mean that the game has become a free-to-play title?
Knockout City is Now Free-to-play
The dodgebrawl game from the creators of Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit has undergone a massive change. As of today, June 1st, 2022, Knockout City is now using a free-to-play model after its split from popular video game publishers Electronic Arts.
The developer also revealed that Knockout City has amassed more than 10 million downloads, a number that is certainly going to see a substantial increase now that the game is free.
June 1st, 2022 also marks the launch of Season 6: City of Tomorrow. The description reads, “In City of Tomorrow, the Super-Science Symposium (S3), the greatest technological showcase of all time, is back in town, and scientists from all over the world are gonna be showing off their wildest inventions.”
Season 6 adds a new ball named the Boomerang Ball, which as the name implies, does what a Boomerang do – it comes back to you – There’s also a new between-match update that brings new mini-games, cosmetics, and audio tracks to enjoy during downtime between games.
There’s also a new energy drink called Starfruit Special and it grants bonus XP for one hour each time players hit it with the special ball. In League Play, players can now earn rewards as they advance through a tier-based ranking system from Bronze to Diamond.
At each season’s end, players will earn items such as cosmetics, virtual currency, and other items based on their overall performance. Lastly, Season 6 also adds a new Brawl Pass, which is the game’s take on the battle pass.
This new pass includes a range of cosmetics to unlock as well as other crossover content with Among Us.
There’s a lot to look forward to in Season 6 of Knockout City and as the game turns free-to-play, not only will the number of players increase, Velan Studios are most likely to bring exciting new features to the game now that it has complete control over the title.
