Forging and Upgrading Weapons in Fire Emblem Engage

Once you complete Chapter 4: A Land in Bloom and liberate the village, two shopkeepers will move into the Somniel. This will open up the Item Shop and Armory, where you purchase consumable items and new weapons, respectively.

You don’t exactly forge weapons from scratch, you simply buy new ones from the Armory. Once you complete Chapter 5: Retaking the Castle, you’ll unlock two more shops: The Boutique and the Smithy.

The Smithy is where all the fun stuff occurs. Here, you can perform three different actions:

  • Refining lets you upgrade weapons using materials.
  • Engraving lets you bestow the power of an Emblem Ring onto a weapon, granting it different stats.
  • Exchanging lets you trade materials for other materials.

First, we’ll talk about refining. You can spend iron, steel, and silver to upgrade your weapons. Upgrading a weapon improves its Mt, Hit, and sometimes Crit. Be sure to upgrade your favorite weapons!

Refining improves the basic combat stats of your weapons.

In addition to this, certain weapons are able to transform into entirely new weapons! You won’t know the exact name of the weapon until you commit to the transformation, but you CAN see the stats and bonuses beforehand, so the transformation does not completely blindside you.

You can find the materials you need for refining by searching the glowing item spots found after battles. Make sure not to leave the map after you’ve won a battle too fast, otherwise you might miss out on some goodies.

And of course, if you have an abundance of one type of material but lacking in another, you can exchange materials. Iron is the most common, while silver is the most valuable, so exchange rates will vary depending on what you offer up.

Secondly, we’ll talk about engraving, which bestows the power of an Emblem Ring upon a weapon. Each Emblem Ring changes the weapon’s stats uniquely, so double-check the stats before you commit to the engraving.

For example, Marth’s engraving is a balanced stat increase across the board, whereas Celica’s engraving grants a massive boost to the Ddg stat. The more Emblem Rings you acquire, the more engraving options you’ll have, so be sure to experiment.

Engraving will change your weapon’s base stats in a variety of ways.

You definitely don’t want to engrave willy-nilly, as it costs Bond Fragments to do so. The stronger the weapon, the more Bond Fragments you’ll need to pay. A weapon can only have one engraving on it at a time, but you change them freely.

Keeping your weapons up-to-date is the key to victory, as they’ll grow stronger with your allies as they level up.
