Most players will quickly need to find a source of light as they journey through the world of Minecraft. Not only can you not see anything, but hostile mobs will spawn in dark places, so if you want to be safe you’ll need light.

In general, the first source of light you’ll come across are Torches. They’re cheap and easy to make, requiring only Sticks and Coal/Charcoal. Once you build a base and start mining, you’ll be able to make better light sources.

In addition to light sources, you’ll also be able to start playing with actual fire by creating a Lighter, or a Flint and Steel as it’s officially called in the game. You’ll need to gather some materials before you can craft a Flint and Steel.

Firstly, you’ll need to find some Flint, which is probably the easier material to find. In fact, there’s a good chance you already have some Flint on hand by digging through Gravel. Every time you mine a block of Gravel, there’s a 10% chance it’ll drop Flint instead of a Gravel block. Make sure to use a Shovel for faster digging.

Secondly, you’ll need an Iron Ingot. You’ll need to descend into the depths of the world in order to obtain some Iron Ore, which looks like beige dots stuffed inside a Stone block. Once you have Iron Ore, stick it inside a Furnace and cook it to create an Iron Ingot.

Once you’ve got your Iron Ingot and Flint, place them together in any fashion inside the crafting grid to craft a Flint and Steel. With the Flint and Steel equipped, press your interact button (Right click on PC) to start a fire on the block you’re looking at.

Be careful! You’re playing with fire after all, so make sure you don’t accidentally light your whole base on fire. Trust us, we’ve been there!
