How to Increase FPS for Elden Ring on Steam Deck

If we were to compare the Steam Deck to its biggest current competitor, The Nintendo Switch, we know that the Switch does use its dock to improve its own performance. In doing this, Switch Players are allowed to play games on their console on a wide range of screens freely without the added worry of performance issues.

The same cannot be said for the Steam Deck however. Elden Ring could have easily been improved in terms of its FPS if Valve were to provide the ability to improve the device’s performance when docked. Valve Designer Greg Coomer, when asked in an interview if they had considered implementing a higher power mode that could be used when the Deck was docked, said, “Yes, but we didn’t choose to make it a really high priority design target… we felt that it was actually better all things considered to not modify based on docked status or mobile status.”

Games typically run at the 1280 x 800 resolution, or 16:80 aspect ratio. You are going to noticeably increase your FPS levels by going for a 16:9 720p resolution.

When trying to get Elden Ring to work at higher FPS, like an ideal 60 frames per second, just how you would like it to run on a PC, there is not much you can really do other than lowering your game’s graphical settings to low-medium. This would mainly include reducing Elden Ring’s resolution to at least 720p, and its graphical settings to medium / low. This includes shadows and other world detailing.

Doing this should comfortably raise your Elden Ring’s FPS anywhere from 40-60 when playing it on the Steam Deck.
