Obsidian Skull is an accessory in Terraria that grants the player immunity to the burning damage that is usually inflicted when coming in contact with Hellstone and Meteorite. However, Meteorite and Hellstone can be mined without Obsidian protection, since you only take damage when touching them in their placed block form; they can be mined from a distance without this immunity. That being said, the Obsidian Skull makes the process much easier.
The Obsidian Skull does not grant the player immunity to lava or other fire-based attacks, however. Additionally, it provides the player with 1 defense.
The Obsidian Skull can be equipped in a social accessory slot which, when worn, gives the player a unique appearance, with the ink-colored skull replacing the player’s head.
How to Get the Obsidian Skull in Terraria
The Obsidian Skull is an item that can only be obtained through crafting. In order to craft the Obsidian Skull, you will need 20 Obsidian, and the Furnace Crafting Station to craft.
Obsidian can be obtained by mining at places where Water and Lava collide, which then creates blocks of Obsidian. You will need a pickaxe with at least 65% pickaxe power to mine Obsidian. If such a pickaxe is not available to you, you will need Explosives to obtain Obsidian as your next best method for mining Obsidian. If you are not going to use the crafted Obsidian Skull(s) for yourself, you can simply sell them. Selling multiple Obsidian Skulls happens to be quite the lucrative way of making money in Terraria.
