You’ll meet your dog on the first day of farming pretty much as soon as you arrive. A cutscene will happen where you and Takakura will come across two stray dogs, one with long ears and one with short ears. Takakura being the crusty old farmhand that he is isn’t too fond of pets but he’s willing to let you keep one around. You get to choose if you want the short-eared one or the long-eared one. They are exactly the same and do the same things, so just pick the one you like best. The one you don’t choose Takakura will take to find a home for. Despite what he says, he builds an outside home for the dog. In other words, he’s certainly not as grumpy as he seems. Here’s proof of why.

You actually do not have to feed the dog, as every morning their bowl is mysteriously filled. Who is doing this you may ask? Why none other than your uncle of course, the self-proclaimed disliker of dogs.

Dogs can learn different tricks such as Beg, Jump, Spin and Paw. To train them, stand by them and press the Y button. Choose from one of the four tricks to work on. If you see the dog react with a cloud above its head and not a heart, it means they’ve had enough of practicing for the time being. When you train them, they can do things like chase away the occasional invader. They’re a great pet and companion to have.
