After that, the icon of this Pokémon will appear next to yours in the lower-left corner of the screen. And then you have to walk a certain distance for your Buddy Pokémon to earn Candies. However, for each Pokémon, you need to walk a different distance. There are 4 distances in total:

1 km – Wailmer, Aron, Magikarp, Pikachu, Caterpie, Skwovet, Fletchling, Sewaddle, Purrloin, and Bidoof.
3 km – Ponyta, Machop, Vulpix, Squirtle, Charmander, Bulbasaur, Medicham, Chikorita, Gastly, and Slowpoke.
5 km – Beldum, Ralts, Larvitar, Dratini, Snorlax, Eevee, Noibat, Goomy, Stunfisk and Litwick.
20 km – Giratina, Dialga, Kyogre, Lugia, Mewtwo, Zapdos, Zarude, Meltan, Xerneas, and Darkrai.

These are just a few examples of the required distances to get Candies. You can also give a Poffin to your Buddy to cut the required distance in half. This way you can get twice as many Candies.
