How Many Friends Can You Have in Pokémon GO

This article is over 2 years old and may contain outdated information

For years since Pokemon GO’s release, fans and critics alike have had one common complaint: the friend list of the game being a little too small. After all, we humans are social animals, so it’s a no-brainer that we want to have as many companions throughout our augmented-reality Pokemon-catching experience.

Thankfully, Niantic heard their playerbase’s pleas for change and in early 2021, changed the way that you use your friend list, as well as the maximum number of friends that you could have.

How Many Friends Can You Have in Pokémon GO?

The change that Niantic made in early 2021 still holds to date, making it so that Pokemon GO players can have up to 400 friends. While this may sound terrific on paper, it still may not be the most convenient thing for the majority of players.

While Niantic increased the size of the friend list drastically, they have also made it so that you share one friend list for each of the Niantic games that you play on a single account.

What this means is that if you have been playing other Niantic games, such as Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, and have been liberally adding friends in that game as well, they will share the same friend list you have with Pokemon GO.

If you fear that this is filling up your friend list too quickly, then follow the steps below to remove friends from your Niantic friend list:

  • Start up Pokemon GO
  • Tap on your profile icon
  • Scroll to the Friends list, the right tab
  • Tap on the desired friend
  • Scroll down to the bottom
  • Select ‘Remove Friend’
  • Confirm to have your friend removed
