Do You Need a Staff to Use Magic in Elden Ring on Steam Deck

Elden Ring is an open-world action role-playing developed by FromSoftware and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment.

Just like Bloodborne, Demon’s Souls, Sekiro, and the Dark Souls series, Elden Ring was directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki. The caveat here is that the game was made in collaboration with the award-winning fantasy novelist and source material creator for the highly popular Game of Thrones television show, George R. R. Martin, who provided a lot of source material for the game’s setting.

Elden Ring was released for Microsoft Windows, Steam Deck, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on February 25, 2022.

The Soulsborne games are known for their difficulty level and Elden Ring is no exception. One of the things that can ease the difficulty curve is using magic.

Magic

Throughout the Soulsborne games, magic has been a worthwhile alternative for players that did not prefer the gung-ho, rushing-in style of melee fighters or the wait-and-watch, firing arrows from afar playstyle of ranged fighters.

For those that do decide to play as a spellcaster, Incantations or Sorceries are going to be the weapons of choice. It is not too difficult to cast spells in Elden Ring (although there are some differences between Incantations and Sorceries) as long as the player wields a quality Staff or Sacred Seal, based on what the player wants to cast.

  • For Incantations, players need to equip a Sacred Seal.
  • For Sorceries, players need to equip a Staff.

Since we will be focusing more on Sorceries, let’s talk a little more about Staves.

Using Staves

Unlike Sacred Seals and Incantations, which are based on the Faith stat, Sorceries are based on the Intelligence stat. The higher the Intelligence, the more damage spells will do and the better Staves players can equip.

All the Staves scale with the Intelligence stat, getting stronger and stronger over time. The only things the player needs to worry about as a spellcaster is proper positioning in battle, their mana and stamina usage, and what kind of Sorceries they have equipped.

Players can also purchase more Sorceries from several NPCs, such as Sorceress Sellen in Waypoint Ruins in West Limgrave and Rogier in Stormveil Castle. And that should be about everything regarding Staves and Sorceries.
