Seemingly out of nowhere, legendary Japanese studio SNK has announced a new Metal Slug game for mobile platforms: Metal Slug Code: J! Developed by SNK and TiMi, Tencent’s game studio, this game sees a return to form for the Metal Slug series.

After various idle and tower defense type games like Metal Slug Attack, Metal Slug Defense, and Metal Slug Infinity, SNK is bringing the beloved series back to its run and gun roots.

Metal Slug Code: J is a 2D action shooter where players will take control of one of the four mercenaries: computer whiz Marco, hotshot engineer Tarma, demolitions expert Eri, or team heart Fio.

Not many details are known about the game yet other than it is a 2.5D version of classic Metal Slug games. Hardcore fans may recognize some bosses from previous games in the series from the trailer, but of course they are all redesigned due to the new art style.

Judging from the trailer, it seems to be a “greatest hits” sort of experience, where players will get to choose their favorite Metal Slug hero and play through their favorite stages from Metal Slug history.

There also seems to be a central hub of some sort, where players can walk around in a full 3D environment and stop by shops. This may also mean that some sort of multiplayer will be in the game.

We will have more news on Metal Slug Code: J in the future.
