Most of the time the purpose of buying an amiibo is to get the specific item or mechanic it’s locked behind. Since they became a thing, they’ve been a bit of a controversial subject, with many comparing them to microtransactions. However, that really depends, as some people collect the amiibos for fun. But if you are not a figure collector, they can definitely be seen as a cash grab. Luckily, Tears of the Kingdom has done something unique in regard to that.

Basically, what the amiibos (specifically when used in Tears of the Kingdom) do is allow you to collect certain outfits much earlier than you normally would. It’s purely a convenience thing and a lot of items that you can get from an amiibo scan you can find in the game. Certain ones are exclusive to amiibos, but with twelve different sets obtainable for free, there’s plenty to acquire.

Amiibos are great for collecting, but you definitely do not need them to enjoy Zelda Tears of the Kingdom to its fullest.
