Oooo. Sparkly.

Shiny hunting has only risen in popularity as newer and newer Pokemon games have been released over the years. What was previously a “once in a blue moon” encounter that would have been celebrated, but ultimately shrugged off as extremely lucky, is now a high-value pastime that Pokemon players around the world indulge in.

With Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl showing off a ton of new features and quality-of-life improvements, there are some neat developments in the shiny hunting section of the game as well. Primarily, every Pokemon other than the 2 box legendaries can be randomly encountered as Shiny Pokemon.

But what about the chances of finding these Pokemon as shiny? Over the years, it has become increasingly easier to find shiny Pokemon, with the games providing us with greater shiny base encounter rates as well as various ways to boost the odds to get shiny Pokemon as well. So…

What are the Default Wild Shiny Chances in the Pokemon BDSP games?

The base odds for encountering a wild shiny Pokemon are 1/4,096. Theoretically, this should result in finding 1 shiny Pokemon with every 4,096 Pokemon encounters.

These odds, on their own, still seem pretty daunting, but there are a number of ways the game lets you make the mission of finding a shiny much easier.

The most common method is chaining wild Pokemon encounters; the more you see the same wild Pokemon, the higher its shiny odds get!

Other methods include the PokeRadar method, using the Shiny Charm, and the one that boosts your shiny odds the highest—to an astounding 1/683—the Masuda method.
