Pokemon Go Axew Guide: How to Catch, Shiny Availability, and More

This article is over 2 years old and may contain outdated information

Despite its unassuming appearance, Axew is actually one of the rarest critters you can find in Pokemon Go. Originally introduced in the fifth generation games, Axew is a pure dragon type Pokemon that can evolve into Haxorus, another pure dragon type with a sky-high attack stat.

Like the vast majority of Pokemon in Go, Axew can theoretically be found just about anywhere in the wild. That said, it has an unbelievably low spawn rate, by most estimates considerably lower than even the likes of Dratini, Larvitar and Beldum. It also doesn’t nest, so you’re pretty much stuck relying on pure luck or the reports of other players.

Unlike many of the game’s rarer Pokemon, Axew has never been featured in raids and neither have the other two Pokemon in its evolutionary line.

If you’re not having luck finding one in the wild, eggs are actually the other place to look for an Axew. That said, it only appears in 10km eggs and only about 2% of the time, based on community data.

Buying additional incubators can speed up the hatching process, but you’ll probably be at it for a while since 10km eggs aren’t that common in the first place.

Axew’s rarity also means that it can be difficult to evolve and level it up, even after you manage to find and catch one. Fortunately, buddying it and walking around with it can speed this up quite a bit. With Axew as your buddy, you’ll get one candy for it for every 5km that you walk, or every 2.5km if it’s excited.

Axew’s shiny form has yet to be released, so keep your eyes peeled for a future event introducing it to the game.

With Axew being as rare as it is, your best bet might be to simply wait for an event in the future where it’s featured as a more common spawn. If you can’t wait that long, best of luck finding it in the wild or in a 10km egg!
