Mario Kart Tour Now Available On iOS, Android; Multiplayer To Come With Future Update

This article is over 5 years old and may contain outdated information

Mario Kart Tour is the latest mobile game developed by Nintendo based on one of its most popular properties, but it seems like things are not off to a very good start for a few reasons.

A few hours ago, Mario Kart Tour has become available for download on iOS and Android, but server issues are preventing some players from being able to play the game. Even those who manage to start a race aren’t particularly thrilled, as the game is currently lacking multiplayer modes.

While the multiplayer menu can be found in the game, trying to access it will display a message saying that multiplayer will come in a future update. This is extremely disappointing, as multiplayer is the reason many enjoy the Mario Kart games on Nintendo consoles.

Mario Kart Tour has been released as a free to play title, but it seems like some features are permanently blocked behind a paywall. The game features a subscription service through the Golden Pass, which grants increased in-game rewards as well as access to the 200cc races. At the time, there’s no way to unlock 200cc races without subscribing.

The worst thing about the Golden Pass is its price, 5$ per month, which is way too high, considering the Nintendo Switch Online service subscription costs way less than this.

Mario Kart Tour is still in its early days, so there’s the chance that a lot will be changed in the near future thanks to feedback. If things stay like they are now, it feels unlikely that the game will be able to become as popular as other Nintendo mobile games.

Mario Kart Tour is now available on iOS and Android worldwide.
