How To Keep Your Gem Meter Up in Shovel Knight: Pocket Dungeon

This article is over 2 years old and may contain outdated information

Shovel Knight: Pocket Dungeon can be a very challenging game, as players have to juggle so many different mechanics at once to complete stages and make it to the end of the game.

Among the mechanics to juggle is the Gem Meter, a meter located in the bottom part of the screen that basically keeps track of your performance in a stage, and rewards you for a good one. Here’s everything you need to know about it.

How To Keep Your Gem Meter Up in Shovel Knight: Pocket Dungeon

The Gem Meter in Shovel Knight: Pocket Dungeon is filled gradually as you hit anything in a stage. Going after single enemies randomly, however, is not exactly the optimal way to fill the Gem Meter, as it gets filled way more by getting Chain Kills, or killing multiple enemies using stage hazards or items. The more effective your kill method is, basically, the more the Gem Meter will be filled.

Keeping the Gem Meter filled as long as possible is extremely important in Shovel Knight: Pocket Dungeon, although not really needed to clear stages, as it grants you a Gem Multiplier that increases the gems you obtain, thus making it easier to activate Relics and unlock new ones from Chester’s shop. There are four different Gem Meter ranks that grant different multipliers:

  • Empty Rank is your basic rank, granting no multiplier.
  • Blue Rank grants a x2 multiplier.
  • Green Rank grants you a x3 multiplier.
  • Red Rank grants you a x4 mulitplier, the highest possible.

You can also understand at which rank you currently are by checking the color of the gems you pick, which will reflect the color of the rank the Gem Meter is currently at. Make sure to keep your momentum going as much as possible, as if the gauge starts decreasing, it will start speeding up after a few seconds, bringing you back to the basic rank in a very short time.
