Hearthstone and Vainglory are two of the biggest multiplayer mobile games of decade. One of them is a MOBA, and the other is a collectible card game (or CCG).
MOBA Duels, from developer Nox Digital, is taking on both at once by combining the best features of MOBAs and CCGs to create a totally new experience.
The game is a 1v1 multiplayer battler where the aim is to destroy your opponent’s base within a certain time limit. You do this by playing the eight cards you’re allowed to bring into each battle, from a total selection of 54.
These cards represent the heroes you usually find in MOBA games, such as Tanks, Archers, Mages, Assassins, and Soldiers.
These heroes all do different things. Tanks are powerful but slow, and good for close quarters combat, while Archers are better off hanging back and chipping away at their enemies from a safe distance.
But that’s not all. Certain heroes are particularly strong against certain other heroes. For instance, Archers are deadly against Tanks but weak against Mages, who can make mincemeat of them.
The only way to win against a seasoned opponent is to know exactly where to put your heroes and who to pit them against. Over time, this strategic task gets harder and harder, as you win duels, unlock new cards, and try to master their particular strengths and weaknesses.
Adding yet more tactical depth, each hero has four unique skills and its own attack pattern, so mastering the game means mastering countless variables.
MOBA Duels is free-to-play, which means you can pay a little bit of money to move things along if you like. However, you can’t unlock new cards this way. The only way to obtain heroes is to win duels, so skill is essential for absolutely everybody who plays.
The game is limited to 1v1 duels currently, but there’s a lot more in the works. Nox Digital is working on a 2v2 mode, tournaments, new skills, and more.
