Pokémon Legends: Arceus was released last month after much fanfare and hype. It is the latest instalment in the Pokémon series and takes a much different turn than its predecessors do in terms of storytelling and game mechanics.
The game takes place in the ancient Hisui region, which would become modern-day Sinnoh eventually. Fighting and capturing Pokémon is drastically different with battles taking place on the overworld instead of turn-based instance battles as was the staple of the series thus far.
A feature from some older Pokémon games which makes its return here is that of talking to your Pokémon, except it comes back to Pokémon Legends: Arceus in a grander fashion!
Talking to Pokémon
The feature of talking to Pokémon has been a part of the series since all the way back from Generation 1’s spin-off game, Pokémon Yellow. Back then, players could talk to their Pikachu and make sure he was doing well from time to time. The happiness feature was not introduced back then though.
This feature was brought back in Generation 4’s remakes of Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver. The feature was improved further by letting the player have any Pokémon follow them around and check up on them whenever they felt like it. Happiness was introduced as a feature by this time, so this increased the following Pokémon’s happiness by quite a bit!
In Pokémon Legends: Arceus, this feature was extended even further by allowing the player to have multiple Pokémon following them!
Increasing Happiness in Pokémon

As time passes, the player would notice their Pokémon having a conversation with each other! This is the newest feature added to the franchise where the player’s Pokémon start to get along with each other and increase their own happiness. The player can also turn around and talk to them, further increasing their happiness and friendliness towards the player.
This feature is exceptionally helpful for Pokémon like Espeon, Umbreon and Lucario that are dependent on happiness to evolve!
