Can You Get Dragonite in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl?

This article is over 2 years old and may contain outdated information

There are not a lot of Pokemon who can brag about being strong battlers as well as universally loved by fans. Fortunately, Dragonite can do just that. This cute dragon was introduced in the very first mainline Pokemon games, in Generation 1’s Pokemon Red/Blue/Green/Yellow.

The Dragon/Flying dual-type Pokemon Dragonite is the very first pseudo-legendary Pokemon to appear in the franchise, boasting a 600 base stat total. It has a cute and tubby appearance in stark contrast to its battling prowess.

If you would like to add a Dragonite to your party in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, then read on below, as we tell you just how to do that!

How to Get Dragonite in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

It would be best to get one thing out of the way: you cannot directly get a Dragonite in any way in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl (other than through trading). You need to catch a Dratini and level it up till it evolves into a Dragonite.

But before you can think of catching a Dratini, you need to obtain the National Dex. This means you need to finish the main story by defeating the Elite Four and the Champion, and then obtain the National Dex upgrade, finally unlocking the ability to find and catch Dratini.

Dratini can be found in two places in the Pokemon BDSP games:

Mount Coronet

Here is how you find Dratini in Mount Coronet:

  1. Have the Super Rod in your possession.
  2. Enter Mount Coronet.
  3. Find a fishing spot.
  4. Fish till you find a Dratini, and capture it.

If you are lucky, you can even find yourself a Dragonair, Dratini’s second-stage evolution.

Grand Underground

Here is how you find Dratini in the Grand Underground:

  1. Enter the Grand Underground.
  2. Enter Fountainspring Cave.
  3. Keep searching for Pokemon until you encounter Dratini, and capture it.

Dratini evolves into Dragonair at level 30, and into Dragonite at level 55.

If you’re searching for Dratini in Fountainspring Cave in the Grand Underground, you will encounter one that is above level 55, which makes your job of getting a Dragonite much easier. Just level it up once to have it evolve into Dragonair, and level it up another time to get your Dragonite!
